01 Why this desk exists

The captain pick is the single decision that swings a fantasy leaderboard. The vice-captain pick is the second-largest swing. Together, they account for a larger share of the variance in your final score than every other pick combined.

This desk publishes the framework our editorial team applies to captain and vice-captain picks. It is the same framework the homepage captain-pick desk uses — applied to every fixture on the calendar.

02 Captain pick framework

Three inputs to a captain pick. Form — the player’s last-five fantasy score in this format. Role — the player’s role in the likely XI. Matchup — how the player matches up against the opposition’s bowling / batting strength.

A captain pick that fails on two of the three is replaceable. A captain pick that fails on all three is a punt. The editorial desk does not recommend punts.

03 Vice-captain symmetry

The defensive version of the captain pick framework: pick the vice-captain as the player whose role most closely mirrors the captain’s role. If the captain is a top-order batter from one side, the vice-captain should be the top-order batter from the other side. Symmetry reduces variance when one side collapses.

Asymmetry is allowed when one side has a stronger top-order than the other. Asymmetry is also allowed when the format makes one role more impactful than the other (powerplay vs death overs). The desk recommends symmetry as the default.

04 When to captain a bowler

A bowler captain pick makes sense in three conditions. First: the bowler’s economy rate is below the format average. Second: the bowler bowls in the powerplay or the death overs where wickets are densest. Third: the bowler’s team is in a wicket-first bowling setup — i.e. the captain’s toss call is to bowl first.

Where two of three conditions hold, the bowler is a viable captain. Where all three hold, the bowler is the desk’s captain pick.

05 When to captain a batter

A batter captain pick makes sense in three conditions. First: the batter bats in the top six. Second: the batter’s venue-adjusted strike rate is above the format average. Third: the batter is batting in conditions that favour batting — flat pitch, short boundary, low dew.

A top-order batter on a flat pitch with a short straight boundary is the desk’s default captain pick for T20 contests.

06 Captain-pick traps

Two failure modes dominate captain-pick regret. The form-trap: picking a player because of one big innings in a different format. The venue-trap: picking a player because of his record at a specific ground, without noticing the dimensions have changed or the square has been relaid.

The defensive version: cross-check three sources before the pick. Last-five innings in this format. The team’s likely batting order. The conditions report from the venue’s most recent game. If all three align, the pick is defensible.

Reader questions

15 Frequently asked

The questions readers most often send to the desk, with answers rooted in the public editorial standards and the platform’s published terms.

Can two captains share the multiplier?

No. One captain, one vice-captain, eleven other players. The captain gets 2×, the vice-captain gets 1.5×, the rest get 1×.

Should the vice-captain be from the same team as the captain?

Defensive default: no. Pick the vice-captain from the opposite team to reduce variance. Asymmetry is allowed when one side has a clearly stronger role matchup.

What about a captain’s worst-case scenario?

A captain who scores 0 still contributes 0× to the leaderboard. The defensive captain pick hedges against a 0-floor by selecting a player with a high baseline rather than the most explosive single-innings ceiling.

Is the captain pick more important than the team balance?

Yes, in fantasy contests that pay out across large fields. In contests that pay out across small fields, team balance and total expected points matter more.
